What the drills teach
The Seven Stems Method treats irregular Spanish verbs as stem-plus-ending patterns. Once you know a verb's stems and their types, you know which tenses use that stem and which endings attach to it.
The drills build that skill step by step:
- Conjugate the stem.
- Recall the endings for each irregular stem type.
- Learn the irregular stems for the model verbs.
- Choose the right stem in context.
- Practice full conjugations.
- Apply spelling rules and true exceptions.
By the end, you are not just filling out tables from memory. You are constructing forms from the pieces that explain them.

How to use the drills
Start with the conjugation card drill. This makes sure you know which endings belong to each irregular stem type.
Then move through the stem-ending drills one type at a time:
- Subjunctive stems, as in hago, ponga, conozca
- Gerund stems, as in durmiendo, durmió, durmiera
- Preterite stems, as in pude, puso, tuvieron
- Preterite-J stems, as in dije, trajeron, condujera
- Future stems, as in saldré, podrá, tendríamos
- Imperfect stems, as in era, iba, veía
After that, use the mixed drills to practice switching between stem types. These are more important than they may look: real conjugation requires choosing both the correct stem and the correct ending.
The later drills add model verbs, sentence context, spelling rules, exceptions, and finally complete verb forms.

Each drill has answers on the following page, so you can print the pages double-sided and use them like flashcards. You can also photocopy the blank drill pages before writing in the answers, so the same set can be repeated.
